The mega popular annual music, film, interactive festival and conference that is South by Southwest (SXSW) gets a piece of the iPhone action this year by hosting a panel discussion on the potential for film-makingon iOS devices.

Pocket Film Studio: The iPhone Revolution promises to ‘bring together film-makers and technology experts to discuss the creative possibilities and personal and professional opportunities available because of this new digital film-making equipment and the community supporting it’.

The event will be held on Sunday 11 March, 11am-12pm at the Hilton Austin Downtown.

As we all know, SXSW is hugely influential and has a reputation for breaking new talent and catching emerging trends whether in music, film or technology.

The fact that the ‘iPhone revolution’ is on the schedule both at Austin and earlier this year in San Francisco at Macworld | iWorld shows how far we have come.

Those who think they are in the know are finally getting it. ‘Apple iOS devices are powerfulfilm-makingtools that have dramatically leveled the playing field and now allow anyone with a story to tell access to robust shoot and edit technology that enables them to produce it,’ says the introduction to the talk.

Why, we have been saying it all along, right from when the iPhone 4 came out of the box and was seized on by savvyfilm-makerswho immediately saw the smartphone’s potential to create content.

It’s good to see Michael Koerbel from Majek Pictures on the panel. Koerbel is of course credited with partner Anna Elizabeth James as the maker of the first iPhone film, Apple of my Eye.

Joining him is Sean Safreedco-founderof Red Giant Software, who produce a range of video-editingproducts.

Also on the panel is director, cinematographer and five-timesOscar nominee Caleb Deschanel. Matthew Dessner will be flying the flag for the Original iPhone Film Festival, and follows its appearance at Macworld | iWorld.

Serenity Caldwell, staff editor on Macworld magazine, will bring some editorial kudos to what promises to be a lively and informative discussion.

SXSW runs from 9 March to 18 March in Austin Texas.
