The Artist won five Oscars at this year's awards. Make a silent film on your iPhone with the Silent Film Director app and 'steal' some of that Hollywood magic

• Chance to win a new iPad and tickets to a special screening of silent film classic Napoleon in new competition for iPhone owners

Following the huge commercial and critical success of The Artist, comes a new competition that aims to tap into the magic and glamour of the silent era in film-making — but on your iPhone.

The International Retro Film Contest is now open for submissions, and we are also pleased to announce that is its official media partner.

The rules are simple, all you need is your iPhone and the Silent Film Director app. Choose between actor or director, drama, comedy or action thriller in a number of genres including black and white, sepia or ‘hippie retro’.

Prizes include the chance to win a new Apple iPad, tickets to see silent film classic Napoleon in San Francisco, iPhone styluses and iPhone stands from Blue Lounge.

Other partners of the International Silent Retro Contest include the prestigious San Francisco Silent Film Festival and our friends at Hand Held Hollywood, a great resource for mobilefilm-makers.

The jury will include myself; Rob Byrne, president of the San Francisco Film Festival; Ben Model, America’s leading silent film accompanist and silent era expert and Craig Badura, educator, media/technology specialist and silent film enthusiast.

Natalie Kinn, spokeperson for MacPhun LLC, developers of the Silent Film Director app, said: “We were inspired by The Artist and decided to launch the contest for all iPhone/iPad users who like to shoot their own movies.  It’s interesting to see what retro masterpieces people can create on their digital devices. I believe iPhone film-making has great potential, and this competition captures different eras while using the latest mobile technology.”

The International Retro Film Contest is now open for submissions; deadline for entries is 28 May 2012. There will also be weekly winners, so submit your works on a regular basis!

The Artist has brought back old-school Hollywood glamour to the big screen, the Silent Film Director app gives you the tools to recreate a little bit of that magic on your iPhone, and who knows where it might lead?

We look forward to viewing your entries.
