New lease of life for Olive, the first feature-length film shot on a smartphone

At the beginning of the year Olive, the first feature-length film shot on a smartphone, played at a couple of cinemas in San Francisco, a feat that the producers hoped would be followed by a wider theatre release.

That plan did not quite come off, with co-director Hooman Khalili telling Techcrunch website that a low budget,  independently-produced movie made on a mobile phone with “a sincere message just isn’t a good fit for Hollywood executives”.

Olive, which was made on a Nokia N8 fitted with a special 35MM lens, and stars Gina Rowlands, is far from dead in the water, we are pleased to hear. Those that have seen it love it, including none other than Dolly Parton who has agreed to write four new songs for the film.

The new version of Olive, recut with Parton’s music, will debut later this month at Stream, the annual ‘unconference’ organised by advertising conglomerate WPP, reports Techcrunch.

Khalili also told the website that he – and his co-director Pat Gilles –  have a different goal, which is to also “democratise distribution”.

How Khalili, whose day job is that of a popular radio DJ in San Francisco, plans to do this is unclear. Olive may get a screening at the Dubai Film Festival before a video/digital release, which is the traditional indie film route.

Whatever, we wish Khalili and Olive well as we were gutted to miss the screening in San Francisco earlier this year by a couple of days and look forward to seeing it in full in the near future.
