Filmmaker Wong shows what can be done on a Galaxy S3
YouTube guru Freddie Wong takes up challenge to make a ‘cool’ action short on a Samsung smartphone
Freddie Wong needs no introduction to many of us, as the American filmmaker, musician, VFX technician and competitive gamer is practically the king of YouTube, with two channels, freddiew and freddiew2, that pull in almost 4 million subscribers, so far ratcheting up a staggering 115 million combined video views.
But for one of his most recent projects he used a smartphone after being challenged by T-Mobile to film on a Samsung Galaxy S3 and make a short video.
In an excellent behind the scenes video (see below), Wong says his remit was to prove you can make a cool action movie without spending “a boat-load of money on expensive cameras and equipment”.
The result is Sandcastle Sensei, a humorous Kung Fu-style short using nothing but the GS3 and a customised steadicam accessory.
What is impressive is the resolution on the Galaxy’s 8mp camera for both depth of field as well as close up shots.
We have not seen too many films of this quality shot on a Samsung, but Wong certainly proves it can be done and with his YouTube fame hopefully others will be inspired to pick up their smartphones and follow in the master’s footsteps.
