Apple bows to pressure and makes old version of Final Cut Studio available again

A piece of news that slipped quietly under the radar, but will not have gone unnoticed by film editors is that Apple has made it its ‘old’ Final Cut Studio available again – at $999.

There was a huge storm of protests from professional moviemakers complaining about a range of issues with its replacement Final Cut Pro X, mainly to do with backwards computability.

However an Apple spokesperson said the there is only a limited quantity of Final Cut Studio available from a telesales number (1-800-MY-APPLE) for customers who need them for ‘ongoing projects’, so it still looks like the old version will be gradually phased out.

There is also the issue of user support for Final Cut Studio. On the release of Final Cut Pro X, more than 8,000 people signed a petition demanding the source code to Pro 7 be sold to a third party, a move that Apple will never agree to.
