The 3rd Olleh International Smartphone Film Festival kicks off today in Seoul, South Korea at the COEX Megabox cinema chain.

Organisers say a record 730 smartphone films were submitted, from which 25 have been shortlisted for the following categories: Korean Competition, Youth Competition and International Competition.

The International Competition section is a welcome new addition and includes genres including music videos, silent films, monodrama and documentaries.

All films are 10 minutes or under and the shortlisted ones were screened on the festival’s website for an online poll and Audience’s Pick Award.

An International Conference of Smartphone Filmmaking will take place on Friday 19 April at Coex Megabox Auditorium 14, beamed live on Ustream, and moderated by Korean iPhone filmmaker Wonsuk Chin with speakers including iPhone Film Festival co-founder Ruben Kazantsev and myself (via a live video link).

The 3rd Olleh International Smartphone Film Festival closes with an awards ceremony on Saturday 20 April. See schedule on the website for full details.
